What we collect, why we collect it, and what we do (and don't do) with it — explained the way we'd explain it to a friend.
Bixcart is a marketplace for ACU students, run by ACU students. We collect the minimum we need to keep the platform working, safe, and useful — your account details, your listings, and the messages you send through the platform.
We don't sell your data. We're not an ad company, and nobody is going to be retargeting you with sneaker ads because you searched for a textbook. The information you share here stays within Bixcart, except in the few cases described below.
Why we're telling you all this
Because "we respect your privacy" means nothing without specifics. So here are the specifics — what we actually collect, why, and how long we keep it.
When you sign up, you give us your name, your @student.acu.edu.ng email, and a password (which we store as a one-way hash — we literally can't see it). We use your ACU email to verify you're a real student, which is the whole foundation of trust on this platform.
When you use Bixcart, we also collect:
We don't ask for your bank details, ID number, or anything like that. Payments and handoffs happen directly between students — Bixcart isn't a payment processor.
Basically, to make the marketplace work and to keep it safe:
We don't use your data to build an advertising profile, and we don't sell or rent it to marketers, data brokers, or anyone else.
Some things are naturally visible to other students — that's the point of a marketplace. Some things never leave our servers.
When we might share more
If required by law, or to investigate fraud, abuse, or a safety issue on campus, we may share relevant information with Ajayi Crowther University administration or law enforcement. We don't do this lightly, and it's not the default — it's the exception for serious situations.
Direct messages between buyers and sellers are private — other students can't read them. But they're not invisible to us. Bixcart runs automated checks on messages and listings to catch things like scam attempts, harassment, or banned items, because a marketplace without moderation falls apart fast.
These checks are automated first. If something gets flagged, a human (one of our small team) may review it as part of handling a report or appeal. We're not reading your conversations for fun — moderation exists to keep the platform usable, not to snoop.
Your data is stored on secure servers with standard protections — encrypted connections (HTTPS), hashed passwords, and access limits on who at Bixcart can see what. No system is perfectly unhackable, but we take reasonable, industry-standard steps to keep your information safe.
We keep your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we remove your personal information from our active systems, though some data (like transaction records) may be retained briefly for legal or anti-fraud purposes.
You're in control of most of this:
To do any of this, just email us — see the contact section below.
We use a small number of cookies and similar technologies to keep you logged in, remember your preferences, and understand how the site is being used. These are functional, not advertising cookies — we're not tracking you across other websites.
If you enable push notifications, we store the minimum device info needed to deliver them. You can turn these off anytime in your browser or device settings.
Bixcart is built for current ACU students, which in practice means everyone using it is old enough to be enrolled in university. We don't knowingly collect data from children, and the platform isn't designed for or directed at anyone under 18.
If we make meaningful changes to how we handle your data, we'll update this page and adjust the "last updated" date at the top. For bigger changes, we'll try to give you a heads-up — through the app or by email — before they take effect.
Continuing to use Bixcart after changes means you're okay with the updated policy.
Questions about your data, requests to access or delete it, or anything else privacy-related — reach out and we'll sort it out.
